Broken home explores a region with decades of personal family history. A region that once played a significant role in the coal mining industry. As power company’s have began to move on from using coal as a primary source of fuel, the region was unable/unwilling to progress with them. The people of the region have become angry and discouraged by the lack of opportunity. Instead of relocating and seeking new opportunities, they choose to stay. Their anger manifests itself in the form of general intolerance for anything that does not fall in line with their antiquated way of life. I have inserted news articles, and essays covering the struggles of the region into the photographs through the use of code editing software. These glitched photographs are my attempt at erasing the feelings I experienced as I traveled the region documenting the poverty-stricken communities and, the signs of hate and exclusion they display so proudly.
